A CIVIL CONVERSATION FOR UNCIVIL TIMES

Ukrainian Civic Courage Fellowships

A Cosmopolis programme for researchers, writers, and creators in Ukraine

Applications open on 10 May and close on 10 June 2026.
Our Ukrainian Civic Courage Fellowships invite Ukrainian thinkers, writers, and creators in Ukraine to spend up to one month in Odessa this summer. We are looking for those who speak frankly about difficult or unpopular things when it is safer to conform—those who understand the cost of silence and take real social, professional, or material risks to remain honest. We are not looking for moral performances, but for a steady refusal to misrepresent what one sees or thinks.
Cosmopolis is gathering independent thinkers and creators from Ukraine and the wider world to engage Odessa and one another in open, dissenting dialogue. This year, we particularly welcome those working on Ukraine’s social and political problems—in any field or medium, from academic research to literature, visual art, and documentary practice.
Fellows will have time and space for their own work, and the chance to engage with the city’s cultural and intellectual life.
We particularly encourage applications from:
* those with combat experience (veterans and active-duty personnel)* those based in frontline regions (including Kharkiv, Kherson, Donbas, and others)* those based in western Ukraine* those based in Odessa
When applying, please indicate whether any of the above applies to you. We take this into account, but this is a single competition with no quotas. Above all, we are looking for bold, original, intellectually serious projects.
Fellows will be in residence for a month between 1 July and 1 October (timing agreed individually). The fellowship includes travel within Ukraine, accommodation in Odessa for up to one month, and a €500 monthly stipend.
