Ukrainian Cosmopolis is an independent collective of thinkers, writers and artists, based in Odessa but reaching across Ukraine, Europe, and the wider world. Opposing all forms of censorship and radicalism, we believe that culture should connect, not wage wars. Odessa is one of Europe’s capitals of freedom—economic and cultural and intellectual. We carry this spirit forward in a time when it is once again under threat.
We believe that inquiry and creativity wither in disciplinary silos and flourish through cross-pollination and a shared effort to understand and enrich human life. Following the principle of enlightened holism, we see thought, art, and civic life as inseparable. Poetry is as precise as any science; mathematics as creative as the finest of arts. Art is no mere ornament, science is never abstract, and the humanities must not be naïve. We believe in clear, substantive and accessible thought—comprehensible to professors and teenagers alike.
Our initiatives—public discussions, civic actions, exhibitions, educational programs—bring together art and philosophy, music and literature, history and science in a shared human project. This is where ideas are tested, voices are heard, and political imagination thrives. A multicultural, polyglot space, Cosmopolis bridges kitchen and university, courtyard and amphitheatre, our Black Sea port and the wider world.
Cosmopolis brings together some of Odessa’s most eminent poets and scientists, artists and writers, scholars and filmmakers living in Odessa and around the world. They are joined by artists and intellectuals from across Ukraine, from Kyiv to Kharkiv and Lviv.
More than a cultural organisation, we are Ukraine’s bulwark of artistic and intellectual freedom, civic courage, and principled critical dialogue. We are convinced these are not luxuries, but the guarantors of Ukraine’s European future and social peace.
