The world needs Odessa, and Odessa needs the world. At a time when intellectual freedom is increasingly under threat, both in Ukraine and globally, intellectuals urgently require a space for truly free scholarship and dialogue—governed only by reasoned argument, civility, and mutual respect.
Odessa has long been a symbol of freedom—artistic, literary, commercial, and religious—a distinctly modern European cosmopolis that has offered refuge to people of all backgrounds, enabling them to live and thrive side by side. The city itself, its ideals, and its extraordinary cultural heritage inspire us to create an international hub for intellectual freedom.
The Ukrainian Cosmopolis will provide a home for genuine inquiry, reflection, and dialogue—at a time when critical thinking and mutual understanding are being rapidly displaced by warring ideological factions.
We believe this freedom is not only the essence of good scholarship, innovation, and art but also a prerequisite for Ukraine’s liberal future. The Cosmopolis will contribute to a sustainable future by embracing diverse global perspectives and fostering collaboration across regions.
