We say what we think, listen to what we don't, and argue without fear.

Ukrainian Cosmopolis is an independent civic-intellectual collective based in Odessa and connected to the wider world. We defend freedoms of thought and speech at a time when both are under growing pressure.
Our international team brings together some of Odessa’s most distinguished writers, scholars, artists, and cultural figures alongside friends and fellow travellers from across Ukraine and the wider world.
Our work is driven by the ancient principle of parrhesia — fearless, frank speech that takes social, political, and material risks — because we know that the cost of silence is greater than the risks of free speech. Once thought retreats into silence, societies drift toward fear, conformity, and authoritarianism — the very unfreedoms Ukrainians have been fighting against.
Odessa is one of Europe’s great free ports: a city shaped by the movement of peoples, languages, and ideas, where great musicians and writers learned from smugglers and dockworkers. Odessa’s world-famous music, literature, and cinema are heirs to polyglot frictions, irreverence, and wit. We carry this spirit forward at a time when it is once again under threat.
We believe that intellectual and creative life withers in professional silos. Our International Residencies, Ukrainian Fellowships, and Dacha Retreats bring writers, scholars, journalists, artists, filmmakers, and other creators to Odessa to meet, argue, and collaborate.
Our Open Conversations confront difficult social, moral, and political questions faced by Ukraine today: questions of language, memory, nationhood, and coexistence; questions of rights, freedoms, and the brutalities of emergency rule. We insist on plain speech without euphemism, censorship, ritual language, or moral performance.
Our Odessa to the World programme supports local writers, artists, scholars, and cultural institutions in reaching international audiences through translation, digital visibility, partnerships, and practical support.
We collaborate with creators and cultural institutions on educational programmes, literary initiatives, documentary projects, heritage advocacy, exhibitions, and civic interventions. Our literary strand is developed in partnership with the Odesa UNESCO City of Literature Office.
At a time of growing pressures to flatten, conform, and purify, Ukrainian Cosmopolis is keeping Odessa what it has always been — argumentative, irreverent, worldly — now a bastion of an open, plural, and confident Ukraine.
