Building an empire of freedom in Odessa

Odesa on the World Stage

Odesa on the World Stage is an international cultural initiative designed to connect Odesa’s opera and musical life with audiences, professionals and cultural institutions around the world.
The project is developed by the Odessa Society of Arts and Music (OSAM) in cooperation with Ukrainian Cosmopolis, which supports its international development, communication and connections with cultural and professional networks in the UK, Italy and across Europe.
At the centre of the project is the development of the Odesa Opera Lovers Club — not simply as a traditional community of opera enthusiasts, but as a creative and professional hub bringing together audiences, artists, musicians, researchers, students, teachers, journalists, cultural managers, diplomats and international partners.
Odesa already has everything needed for such a network: a remarkable opera house, professional artists and musicians, a rich musical heritage, an established audience and international cultural connections. What is missing is a permanent mechanism capable of bringing these elements together and connecting them systematically with the wider international cultural environment.
Odesa on the World Stage aims to create this connection.
From one performance to an international audience
The project begins with a practical pilot: the professional audiovisual production of one complete performance by the Odesa Opera.
But the recording is only the starting point.
Around the production, we will create a wider digital ecosystem: a trailer and short video extracts, interviews and artist stories, behind-the-scenes material, an English-language synopsis and subtitles, editorial content about the Opera and Odesa, artist biographies and an international press kit.
Together, these materials will create multiple ways for international audiences to encounter Odesa Opera, while also providing tools for professional outreach to opera houses, festivals, conservatoires, critics, cultural organisations and opera communities.
Building an international network
The project combines digital audience development with professional cultural exchange.
We will research international opera audiences, map relevant Ukrainian and European cultural networks and establish new relationships with opera organisations, professional platforms, music media and cultural institutions.
Existing European networks such as Opera Europa and OperaVision provide an important professional environment and demonstrate how opera can move beyond the physical theatre and become part of a wider international cultural exchange.
Together with OSAM, Ukrainian Cosmopolis will support the international dimension of the project, helping to develop communication with international audiences, establish professional relationships and connect the initiative with cultural organisations and networks in the UK, Italy and across Europe.
Through these connections, the project aims not only to introduce Odesa’s musical culture to new audiences, but also to create opportunities for professional exchange, partnerships and future collaborative projects.
A model designed to grow
The success of the project will not be measured simply by the number of people who watch one performance.
We want to understand whether a local cultural community can build a sustainable mechanism for reaching international audiences, developing professional relationships and creating new opportunities for collaboration.
The experience of the first production will therefore become the basis for a model that can be used for future operas, concerts and musical projects — and potentially adapted by other cultural organisations in Odesa and Ukraine.
In the long term, the Odesa Opera Lovers Club is envisioned as a permanent international community connecting Odesa with European and global opera networks, while OSAM develops its capacity to coordinate and expand this process.
For Ukrainian Cosmopolis, the project is also part of a broader mission: creating new connections between Odesa and the world and helping local cultural initiatives become active participants in international cultural exchange.
Odesa on the World Stage begins with one city, one community and one production — but aims to create a lasting international presence for Odesa’s musical culture.
