Building an empire of freedom in Odessa

Cosmopolis × 11th International Literature Festival Odessa (ILO)

September 17–20 2026

Ukrainian Cosmopolis participated in the 11th Odesa International Literature Festival, held in Chișinău as part of the CHILL Festival, supporting the participation of Odesa writers, artists and cultural institutions.
The Odessa programme was organised by Cosmopolis members Maya Dimerli, Head of the Odesa UNESCO City of Literature Office, and Ulrich Schreiber, founder of the festival.
With the support of Cosmopolis, writer Taya Naydenko, poet Vladyslava Ilinska and museum director Olena Ilyasova joined the festival. The Odesa delegation also included young poet Mykhailo Kutsak and artist Maria Apryatova, alongside Suji Kwock Kim, our first UNESCO–Cosmopolis Polyglot Literary Resident.
Through literary readings, discussions and presentations, the delegation explored contemporary Ukrainian literature, cultural memory, war, displacement and the preservation of Odesa's heritage. The festival also provided opportunities to strengthen international partnerships, including cooperation with UNESCO Cities of Literature.
The initiative was supported by Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature, Göteborg UNESCO City of Literature and the Sutasoma Trust.
